Update: Samsung Galaxy Compass

August 3, 2009 in News 10 Comments

Mobilizy is actively investigating minor issues surrounding the Samsung Galaxy’s compass firmware, which effects the user-experience of mobile augmented reality applications such as the WIKITUDE World Browser.  Mobilizy was informed by Samsung per e-mail that a firmware update will be released to remedy this.  [Stay tuned for further updates regarding the Samsung Galaxy compass firmware update.]
Samsung Galaxy: Firmware Update

To the best of our knowledge, the latest Samsung Firmware Update (version I7500VIAIG6) HAS NOT solved the compass issue. Mobilizy is aware that the Samsung Galaxy compass returns non-default values with the recent S/W firmware. This issue will be fixed in a new Samsung Galaxy firmware update within the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, Mobilizy is looking into developing a workaround for this issue so Samsung Galaxy-users can run WIKITUDE until the firmware update is release from Samsung.

DEVELOPING A TEMPORARY SOFTWARE FIX:
Mobilizy has created a tiny application that reads out the built values of the S/W version your Samsung Galaxy, in order to develop and implement a temporary fix, (until the next Samsung Firmware Update). This application will allow us to learn certain built values of the S/W version of the Samsung Galaxy that is experiencing the compass issue.

You can find this application here: http://is.gd/20Lih

In order to install and run this application you need to be able to install applications from “Unknown Sources” on your Samsung Galaxy Android Handset.

// MENU // Settings // Applications // Check off [] Unknown sources
(allow install of non-market applications.)

After installing and running this application please make a screen-shot (or photograph your handset screen with a camera) and kindly ask you to please e-mail us a copy of the screen shot to: developers@mobilizy.com

We are looking for the following “important information” values from “Board:” on.

    Has Samsung solved this issue now?

    What exactly is the problem? Is it as soon as the phone is tilted above the horizon the compass flips 180 degrees in the wrong direction?

    Samsung has confirmed with us that there is a firmware issue regarding the gravimetric sensors (digital compass), this is why the compass has some problems. Samsung also informed us that this compass issue would be fixed in an upcoming firmware release. In the meantime, we have developed a work-around which is part of the latest WIKITUDE release available on the Android Market.

    Im from the Netherlands and still waiting for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy. It will probably be available in a fourtnight. However the Dutch version will be white. But I think the Samsung will be the most appealing Android phone up till now (Amoled display, battery, etc).

    I’m a webdesigner and love internet and it’s possibilities. And Android/Google will make the future different. Hopefully it will be a better place, but surely it will be fun.

    Hope to receive my Galaxy soon. Then I will post my experiences here. Also hope to learn a lot here of the Samsung and Android.

    Hope to meet other galaxy owners http://www.samsung-galaxy.com
