Brand New: Wikitude World Browser 5.0 – download now!

July 21, 2010 in Blog, News 14 Comments

We launched a completely new version of our Wikitude World Browser (Android) today, which includes some fantastic new features and improvements. iPhone update will follow soon.

Over the last weeks and month the Wikitude Android engineering team focused on the valuable feedback we received from the Wikitude community. Many many thanks!! After plenty of UI Workshops, Client-Server optimizations and improvements we completely re-engineered Wikitude. The goal was to deliver the ultimate AR experience, with lightning speed and giving you everything you want to know around you with only a few clicks.

Here is the complete report:

Startup
No matter where you are, start Wikitude and get the list of Worlds around you – almost immediately. Choose a World and click “Cam”, no more than 2 clicks are required to access places around you in Wikitude’s Augmented Cam. All synchronized, at breathtaking speed … your phone will glow!

UI Improvements
The list of Worlds now shows the Worlds logos, the name and distances. You can sort Worlds by name, release-date and nearby distance. If you want to know more about a particular World, longpress it and click the “Details” option.

Cam View
Cam-View is now based on a 3D framework (openGL) which enables displaying POI markers as 3D models and scale markers depending on their size. Upcoming updates will enable 3D features for World-Developers too.

Wikitude-Search
Let’s say you want to find Wifi hotspots closeby: Click the search icon in Wikitude, type in “wifi” or “wlan”. Wikitude scans all the Worlds around you and gets back to you within seconds with restaurants and cafes with WIFI access.

Enjoy!

why does the app require the capability to call special numbers?

    Hi Florian,
As Wikitude offers the possibility to place a call directly out of the application, if the POI has a phone number available. But of course there are no calls done without your knowledge. As soon as you give the users the possibility to to call from your app, you need to set this permission.

    Hi Wikitude Team,
have the same problem as Roelof Heida mentioned with the new wikitude version. After a while (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter) wikitude is just “blown away” and the Android desktop shows up. The wikitude process isn’t there anymore, not even in the background (in the taskiller app no wikitude symbol is listed after this event).
Beside of this: The new version is really great!
Only this awful trend to deface icons by buttonize & glossify them (I hate Apple therefore) is disturbing me a little bit. Especially if the icons aren’t used as real buttons! Please stop disfiguring all this nice graphics from your world developers.

    Hi,
Did you update to our latest build (9.01), which was launched yesterday? Please give me feedback (nicola.radacher(at)mobilizy.com) which phone and Android version you have and if this issue still occurs with the new version.
    Thx and greetings
    Nicola

I recognized that there is a new possibility to specify a beta-world key in the client settings. Because our world is currently in beta status, this would be a nice thing for us. Exists there according documentation?
    Greetings
    Christian

I just downloaded wikitude to my Incredilble phone, but because everytime I opened the app it caused my phone to either re-start or freeze, I ended up uninstaling. I will be whilling to try again if this issue gets fixed.

    Hi Christian,
The beta-world functionality is available in Wikitude Android currently. You need to activate the ‘testing’ mode in the Settings. In Wikitude.me when uploading you can define your Worlds’ status (Public or Testing). There is a description to each status if you hover over the ‘?’.
If you need further information, please contact me.
    Greetings
    Nicola
